The wake dies down around 7:15 in late August. The last skiers are peeling off Pea Hill Creek, the coves are quieting, and the dock lights start to come on one by one. If you already live here, you know the shift. What you may not have mapped is how much of Gasburg's real calendar starts precisely when the water empties out.
This post is for the people who already own a porch on this side of the lake. It is not a case for moving here. It is a working guide to the next eight weeks, built around three named venues that are all within a fifteen-minute drive of each other and one Saturday in October that is worth blocking off now.
The triangle worth mapping
Most of what makes Gasburg feel like an actual place, rather than a mailing address, sits inside a small triangle of establishments that reliably have something on the calendar between now and the end of October.
- Rosemont Vineyards, 1050 Blackridge Road, just over in La Crosse
- The Club at Lake Gaston Resort, 300 Lake Resort Drive, Gasburg
- The Kennon House, 7001 Gasburg Road
Point yourself at any one of those on a given weekend and you have a plan. String two together and you have a weekend. What follows is what is actually happening at each, with the dates and names attached.
Rosemont's late-summer schedule, plainly
Rosemont Estate has been in the Rose family since 1858, sitting on 450 acres near Lake Gaston, and the winery has settled into a rhythm of Saturday programming that most of us treat as ambient background until we actually read the calendar.
Recent Summer Saturdays have paired the tasting room with food from Sista's Southern Kitchen, serving from 11 to 5, with Ann Meadows performing live. A separate Wine + Dine afternoon has featured Short Stacked serving mini pancakes, waffles, and dirty sodas, which is a different kind of afternoon than the one you were expecting when you signed up for a wine club.
Two dates worth circling in a pen you can trust:
- August 16, the next Wine Club Pick-Up Party. Rosemont's Wine and Barrel Club members are invited from 1 to 6 pm, tasting the three wines in the current Mixed release. If you are already a member and have been letting the shipments stack up, this is the polite way to fix it.
- Labor Day weekend, a return performance from North Tower, blending Top 40, Beach Music, Funk, Rock, and Oldies. Beach music at a vineyard twenty minutes from your dock is a very specific pleasure, and it is the kind of thing you forget is on offer until you drive past the sign.
Later in the fall, Rosemont hosts a RIEDEL Wine Glass Experience, tasting Rosemont wines in varietal-specific stemware to see how the glass changes aroma, flavor, and balance, followed by the 17th Annual End of Harvest Festival, a day to sit in the vineyard with the season winding down. Both are worth putting on the household calendar before the leaves start turning and everyone remembers at once.
The Club, and the weeknight case for it
Most residents think of The Club as the resort with the pool and the marina, and stop there. The under-used part is what it looks like on a Tuesday.
The property sits directly on the lake with a private boat ramp, 85 boat slips, waterfront motel rooms, park model rentals, a lakefront outdoor pool, 300 feet of private beach, a bowling alley, indoor pool, indoor putt-putt, arcade, exercise room, and racquetball court. The Family Fun and Fitness Center is the piece worth remembering when it is 96 degrees and the kids have burned through the boat. Ten lanes of bowling in a climate-controlled building on Lake Resort Drive is not something most lakes on this side of I-95 offer.
The kitchen is the second under-used piece. The Clubhouse restaurant serves everything from children's menus to Prime Rib, and the Rendezvous Restaurant and Lounge takes reservations at 434-577-2193. A Wednesday night without a plan and a Wednesday night with a booked table at Rendezvous are not the same Wednesday night.
Kennon House, when you want a fork and a real chair
The Kennon House at 7001 Gasburg Road is the venue in the triangle most locals under-book, partly because it is quiet by design and partly because the menu changes by occasion rather than by week. It is where you go when the meal is the plan.
A recent multi-course seating at the Kennon House ran a menu that is instructive about what the kitchen is capable of:
Crab and corn chowder to start. A dinner salad with your choice of dressing. Entrée selections of seared Atlantic salmon, herb-roasted Cornish game hen, rib eye steak, or lamb chops. Closing with the Kennon House Holiday Duo of chocolate chess pie and fried banana cheesecake.
That is not a lake-town menu. That is a menu you would drive to Richmond for, sitting fifteen minutes from most Gasburg driveways. Reserve well ahead, particularly for anniversaries and holiday sittings, because seating windows are tight and the room fills from repeat locals first.
The one Saturday to block off: October 10
If there is a single date in the next two months that residents should treat as non-negotiable, it is Saturday, October 10, 2026, 10 am, when the Taste of Brunswick Festival returns. It is not held in Gasburg proper. The festival's operational address is 1380 Lake Gaston Drive, Gasburg, VA 23857, but the event itself sets up at the Brunswick County Airport, 77 Airport Drive, Lawrenceville, from 10 am to 4 pm. It is the closest thing this county has to a shared annual day, drawing about 10,000 attendees annually from across the state and beyond.

Two Gasburg cookers to root for at the stew tent: George Daniel of Gasburg and Randy Bowen of Gasburg, both returning stewmasters. If you have never actually tasted the difference between two cook-teams' Brunswick stew back to back, you have never really lived in Brunswick County. The recipe is old enough to have a birthday. The original was concocted in 1828, built at the time on bacon, onions, bread, butter, seasonings, and squirrel meat. The modern version is calmer.
Winning the cook-off comes with an unusual perk. The winner is invited to cook stew at the Capitol on Brunswick Stew Day at the General Assembly. A hobby with a legislative footprint is a very Brunswick County kind of hobby.
The map for the in-between days
The triangle covers the anchor evenings. The rest of the county fills the space between them, and it is worth naming the places most non-residents miss.
The Shady Shack Grill and Flop Bar in Bracey, the only waterfront bar and grill on Lake Gaston, is a short water-taxi's worth of shoreline from Gasburg docks and is the correct answer when someone asks where to eat with wet feet. Dot's Country Store in Danieltown serves Brunswick Stew year-round as a stop on the Brunswick Stew Tour, which is the answer when someone visits in February and asks what the fuss is about. Sand Dollar Sea Planes, run by Steve Harrison, offers seaplane rides over the county and the lake, which is what you book when a family member has a milestone birthday and you want to earn Aunt of the Year.
For the water side, Holly Grove Marina offers lake access, boat and kayak rentals, and there is a public DGIF boat launch near Tanglewood Shores Country Club. Both are useful to know when guests arrive without a plan and you would rather not spend the morning trailering your own boat.
What actually makes Gasburg feel local
The mistake most guides make is treating Gasburg as a launchpad for the lake, and treating the lake as the whole story. It is not. The wine club Saturday, the ten-lane bowling alley on a rainy Wednesday, the fork-and-knife dinner on Gasburg Road, and the October Saturday when half the county shows up in a stew line are the actual texture of living here. All four exist within a fifteen-minute radius of most of our driveways. Almost none of them show up on the first page of a search for what to do at Lake Gaston.
Save this list. Put October 10 on the calendar. Call Rendezvous for Wednesday. Book the Kennon House for the birthday. That is the eight weeks.
